AMIS Culture Club: Film screening - The Promise

The Promise movie posterKamel Benkaaba (Department for Media, Cognition and Communication and AMIS, UCPH) will introduce the film, and lead the discussion following it.

The Promise (1996) is directed by the acclaimed Belgian filmmakers Jean-Pierre and Luc Dardenne who won two Golden Palms at the Cannes film festival, for Rosetta (1999) and The Child (2005). The Promise focuses on a teenager, Igor, who works with his father, exploiting a group of immigrant workers from various countries. One of them, an African from Burkina Faso named Hamidou Badolo, falls from a scaffold during a visit from labour inspectors. With his dying words Hamidou asks Igor to promise to look after his wife Assita and their baby child. This tragic event will be the beginning of a deep ethical awakening for Igor.
